Final Steps Toward the Final Public Oral and the Ph.D. Degree in the Physics Department

Final Steps

When a student has written his/her thesis and is ready to defend, there are several steps to be followed. Most importantly, it is necessary to speak with the Graduate Administrator (Room 210) for a description of the complete process.

Two weeks before the Final Public Oral Examination:
  1. Going on deposit: This means that the thesis is placed on the web for all department members to read, for a period of two weeks. If corrections are suggested, the student makes them at that time. The Web administrator must receive an e-mail from the student with the thesis in pdf format. Please discuss this with the Web administrator in advance of this e-mail.
  2. One hard copy is to be placed in the office of the Graduate Administrator - Room 210.
  3. The student schedules the date and time of the Final Public Oral Examination. The committee members are selected.
  4. There are several forms to be completed when going on deposit. These include:

    1. Thesis advisor's approval form:
    2. Degree Application Form
    3. Request to Hold the Final Public Oral Examination
    4. Reader's Report (2)
    5. Dissertation Report Form
    6. Exit questionnaire

    8. An abstract
    9. A title page
These forms are delivered by the student to Dean David Redman's office, 201 Nassau Hall.

Within a few days, the request is approved by the Dean, and then two more forms are sent to the Graduate Administator's Office: Microfilm Agreement Form, and Survey of Earned Doctorate.

After the Final Public Oral exam, the student takes two copies of the thesis to the bindery. They are to be taken to the Seeley Mudd Library not more than two weeks after the FPO, together with a Final Public Oral Examination Report Form (http://gso.princeton.edu/forms/e65/academic_forms.html) another abstract, title page, CD with thesis in pdf format, the Microfilm Agreement Form, and a check book.

Two forms are then taken to 201 Nassau Hall: a signed copy of the Final Public Oral Report Form, and the original Survey of Earned Doctorate plus one copy.

THE COMMITTEE CONSISTS OF:

  • a minimum of 3 faculty members who are at least at the rank of assistant professor - at Princeton, two of whom have not been readers.
  • Theorists must have an experimentalist on the committee;
  • experimentalists must have a theorist on the committee.
  • Both theorists and experimentalists must have a committee member who is not in their area of physics.
  • Both of these requirements may be the same person.
