Data from the middle of ATJ graphite rod 1. The structure with period ~ 0.003 sec is believed to be the transverse bending mode of the rod, predicted to have frequency 350 Hz (by B. Riemer, 10/3/00).
Data from the middle of ATJ graphite rod 1. The structure with period ~ 0.00025 sec is believed to be the longitudinal mode of the rod, predicted to have frequency 4kHz (by B. Riemer, 10/3/00). The highest frequency oscillations, at 100 kHz, may be evidence of the radial oscillation coupling in to longitudinal strain.
Data from the middle of ATJ graphite rod 2. The amplitude of the strain in rod 2 is about 2/3 that observed in rod 1, which indicates that more energy was deposited by the 24 GeV beam in the upstream rod 1.
Data from the middle of carbon-carbon composite rod 1. Because of the very lower thermal expansion coefficient of the carbon-carbon composite, much lower strains are expected here than in the ATJ graphite. If the observed oscillations at 25 kHz are evidence for radial oscillations, the speed of sound in the carbon-carbon is about 0.4 that of ATJ graphite. The longitudinal oscillations in the 4" carbon-carbon rod should then have frequency 3 x 0.4 = 1.2 times that in the 12" ATJ rods => 4.8 kHz. But there appears to be little evidence for either the longitudinal or the bending modes in the carbon-carbon rod. The observed high frequency strain appears to be about 1/2 that in the ATJ rod 2 (which is the correct comparison as the carbon-carbon rod is preceded by an ATJ rod).
